Safe & Sound Protocol

The Safe & Sound Protocol is currently only being offered by Dana and is (offered) over the course of a three-month semester.

The Safe & Sound Protocol is based on the Polyvagal Theory and focuses on the relationship between the autonomic nervous system, auditory sensitivities and social emotional processes. The SSP is a sound-based intervention that has been found to calm physiological and emotional states. It was designed to reduce stress and auditory sensitivity and enhance social engagement and resilience by stimulating nervous system regulation. This is accomplished by simultaneously exercising and systematically challenging the auditory system with specifically processed / filtered music.

A key feature in the Safe & Sound Protocol is co-regulation; the attuning of nervous systems.  The structure of the 30 minute SSP sessions paired with co-regulation, will help your system to experience safe connection in the context of our sessions (this is why you cannot listen by yourself exclusively!).  Therefore, you will be allotted up to 18 in-person, or virtual, supported listening sessions.  Supported listening occurs when you’re listening to your SSP playlist and I am physically (or virtually) in the space with you, offering my system’s regulation, support and emotional containment while you listen.  I will also be present to help you come back into regulation should you bump into any activation (dysregulation) during your listening.
